Personal History
Tom Lawson, affectionately called 'Tommy' by friends and family, is the youngest of five children born to Annie (Duncan) and Dean Lawson in the mountainous area of Riceville, North Carolina. Both the Duncan and Lawson families contain a long line of military and law enforcement men and women, leaving Tommy with his career choices narrowed down for him before he was even born. Much to his dismay.

While his eldest brother Dennis dominated the football field, his other brother Aaron was equally gifted at baseball, and his twin sisters (Mary Beth and Christine) were track and field stars -Tommy was only a force to be reckoned with at the local arcade. As his brothers rough housed and his sisters ran from them, the youngest Lawson would hide away with an Etch-A-Sketch or a doodle pad. Much to his parents' dismay.

Regardless of all the signs that Tommy was on a different path, the family continued to push him in the same direction as all the Lawsons and Duncans before him. He managed to do fairly well as a Boy Scout which appeased his parents. Their youngest son may have been different than his siblings but he never had a rebellious nature to defy the path his family set for him.

His high marks in school provided him with grants while his siblings relied on military and athletic scholarships for college. Tommy continued please his parents as a young adult, opting for a degree he could use in law enforcement. However, his areas of study contained his passions even if in the form of elective classes.

After obtaining his Bachelors degree, Tommy went back home to a position his uncle (Buncombe County Sheriff) obtained him as a G Squad deputy -back up for full time patrol deputies. Rare did the youngest Lawson leave the office which was fine by Tommy, allowing him to pursue his Masters. He was for all intents and purposes, the IT technician of the Sheriff's office which eventually landed him a position with the Criminal Investigations Division.

His time with CID connected Tommy with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation which pleased his family immensely. The family could now brag that their youngest member was an agent with the state, even if they were certain it was simply another desk job behind a computer. Fortunately for Tommy, it was far enough away from home that his family never found out his start with the N.C. SBI was spent as an artist rather than a computer geek.

It was during his time as a state agent that Tommy found yet another love that his family would not understand. -The sea. There were a great deal of streams and lakes close to home but the ocean called to Tommy unlike any other body of water ever had. After three years of spending nearly every day off over the summers, traveling to the coast, his supervisor made the brilliant suggestion that he move to Florida. Much to his boss' dismay, that was exactly what Tommy did.

His professional and educational background made him a prime candidate to work in various areas of the Miami-Dade Police Department Crime Lab. Not being a Miami police officer, Tommy was required to start in a position obtainable by civilians -a forensic artist, until he finished all the necessary officer training that cleared him for other departments. It wasn't something he rushed, as he thoroughly enjoyed the job change as well as the new setting.

Not until Dean Lawson angrily voiced the disappointment in his youngest not yet carrying a badge after a year in Florida during a family gathering, did the thirty year old buckle down and finished his certification. Upon completion, Tommy was almost immediately pushed off to other needed positions in the lab. Yet obtaining a badge was not to his dismay.

Tommy proved himself an asset in every area of the lab he was tasked for which meant he remained out of the field. His recent position as the a/v specialist did not abscond him from duties to the FCL or Forensic Imaging on high priority cases. And employed in one of the most reputable crime labs in the country while carrying a badge was nothing his family could protest. Neither could they complain that he hardly visited since his vacations were no longer spent seeking the sea now that he lived by it.

However, the best thing about being in Miami was not the ocean or having a job he enjoyed that pleased his parents. There was something to be said about no longer standing in anyone's shadow and finally be Tom Lawson.
